We are continuing to enjoy crafting from our Minecraft based crafting book* by Choly Knight. This week E decided to make a creeper head so we combined Choly’s creeper face design and instructions for her Steve head and came up with this!
It was dead easy and we re-used some IKEA packaging (yes, I am a wee bit of a fan) and some coloured paper from our trusty local scrapstore.
If you want to make your own here are some basic instructions:
Tools and Materials Required:
- a square cardboard box or some spare cardboard to make your own
- packing tape (if you are making your own box)
- scraps of black and various shades of green coloured paper
- craft knife
- ruler and pencil
- glue stick or PVA
Step 1: Make the box
If you don’t have a suitable box to re-use then you can easily make your own from cardboard. We were lucky enough to have large sections of cardboard left over from wardrobe packaging but you can use any thick cardboard that is at least 24cm square. Cut five 24x24cm squares from the cardboard and join together with packing tape to form a box with one side missing. Our cardboard was large enough that we were able to cut 3 sides as one piece and just fold them into shape.
Step 2: Mark the box into a grid
On one side of the box, use your pencil and ruler to draw lines 3cm apart both vertically and horizontally forming a grid.
Step 3: Cut eye holes
Using the picture below as a guide, carefully cut two eye holes in the box with your craft knife.
Step 4: Make the face
Cut out 18, 3cm square pieces of black paper. We used our paper trimmer* for this. You can also cheat and cut out a single 12cmx6cm square of black for the largest part of the mouth. Glue the paper pieces to the grid following the pictures.
Step 5: Complete the design
Cut out 44, 3cm pieces of green paper in various shades and randomly stick them to the rest of the grid. You can follow the pictures but it doesn’t really matter. Either grid and cover the other sides of the box in a similar fashion, paint the other sides a solid green or, like us, just leave the box as it is because, well, 7 year old attention spans are short!
And you’re done!
Hint:
To make the box more wearable you can wear it over the top of a hat so it doesn’t slip around so much. BOOM!
