Out of the blue one day my daughter decided she needed a kite, like, right now. So to the trusty interwebs I went and discovered a tutorial on making a diamond kite. However, failing to have any dowels, large plastic bags or flying line I improvised. So here is my upcycled version of the classic …

Shoulder Fitting Woes

updated on October 13, 2018September 7, 2018Leave a Comment on Shoulder Fitting Woes

So I’ve been sewing for myself for a while now and I think I’m reaching the point where I’m going to have to bite the bullet and create my own sloper/patterns. The reason being that I just cannot seem to work out how to get a top to fit my chest, shoulders, back and bust …

  • It must be nearly Autumn as I found myself fixing my too short pumpkin hat. Learned how to pick up stitches on the cast on edge and then how to do a stretchy bind off in rib. Also had to learn how to undo my first bind off as it was waaay too tight. 🙄 Played yarn chicken and won! This was all that was left after binding off 😅
  • Oh hai! Long time no post. Lost my sewjo big time but I'm back just enjoying the small wins, like fixing the zip on this super adorable backpack! Got it for £10 with a broken zip (pull had come off one side) but fixed it without even having to unpick a stitch. I just nipped the very bottom teeth off the side without the pull and manhandled the tape back into the pull. Then I just added a stitched stopper above the missing teeth. Done!
  • Made some cozy #brassiejoggers from @greenstyle_patterns. These are actually the original pattern before the update which changed the style quite a bit.

The fabric is a thick fleece backed sweat that I got from my local @yeast_scrapstore_glastonbury and it really doesn't have the required stretch but I think I made it work. Kind of 😅 At best I'd say the stretch is 20% and the pattern calls for a minimum of 25%.

Originally I was unhappy with how low the rise is (not enough vertical stretch) but it's growing on me. This is the mid rise.

I didn't have any matching rib or CL so I used self fabric for the waistband and sized the band up one size. It JUST stretched to fit. I skipped dividing the waistband, put the button holes at the top and inserted a drawstring and 2" elastic.

This is a regular length small (the old measurement chart has this as 27-28" waist and 35-37" hip) shortened by an inch at the thigh (it's drafted for 5'8") with hemmed legs (1/4", then 1" turned under). I am 5'5" and currently measure 26" waist, 37" hip.
  • Bought some organic cotton lycra vests in a sale for £3 each and made some #scrundies from @stitch_upon_a_time. Perfect period pants if you use reusable pads. Should be able to squeeze a bra out of the remaining scraps.
  • Another epic @sewdesune cut and sew project from @spoonflower. Gifted to E for Christmas (make sure you take advantage of the 1/2 price fat quarter sales!) and sewn with help today 🙂 I present: Squoge (Square Doge).
  • This is my final #BRAugust2021 make: an @ohhhlulu #jasminebra. Sadly the fit isn't quite right (no surprises as I'm off the bottom of the size chart) so I'm off to the Facebook group to troubleshoot 🙂

This is an XS and I currently measure 32" full bust. It's just really tight and uncomfortable over my bust. I'm thinking to salvage it I might take off the top picot elastic and redo it in a softer fold over elastic.

First time using my overlocker to make a bra and it looks so pretty! Also, it took me ages to source an extra wide hook and eye closure that fit my finished bra so definitely measure and adjust the bra before adding the elastic if you want to avoid that 🙂
  • Finally finished my unlined #wikstenunfoldingjacket. This was such a stressful make due to my perfectionism. I cut it from an old, much loved linen and organic cotton woven baby wrap by @didymos_babywearing.

It took a very long time to lay out the pieces to fit as the wrap was only a size 4 which equates to roughly 370cm x 65cm. There were also a couple of stains to work around. I originally wanted the jacket to be mid length but could only fit the short size in the end. There are only small scraps left over!

Mods:
- unlined: overlocked/serged seams, added 1" to body for hemming, added 1" to pockets to form facing.
- understitched the collar as it is made from both the main and reverse sides of the fabric and I didn't want the joining seam to show.
- cut the collar pieces cross grain due to shape of fabric.
- size small but the sleeve/side seams were sewn with a 5/8" seam allowance instead of 3/8" which I guess roughly sized it down by a size.

I sewed the seam with the larger SA as I originally wanted flat felled seams so the sleeve seams would look pretty when I rolled the cuffs. However, once I sewed it wrong sides together I realised I wanted the seams on the inside instead so unpicked them.
Then when I went to redo them I decided a flat felled seam was too much work so I decided to do French seams. But once those were sewn the seams were too bulky so I unpicked the first pass and just overlocked it. 😬

The wrap is Jade Rose Linen Cherry Blossoms by Didymos with the reverse of the wrap used on the outside. Although I loved the cream colour, I thought the darker side would be more practical. I'm still not sure I made the right choice on using the cream side for the upper collar. 🤔

Fun fact: I used to run a sling library and am actually a qualified baby wearing consultant. I also wore my daughter for over 5 years and still have a few more wraps to convert 🙂

  • Finished my final two #BRAugust2021 makes but only this #barrettbralette is wearable and only after I removed 2" from the back band 😬

I get the feeling this wasn't the best fix as the apex is now off and the side seam is 1/2" too far back on each side but I really wanted to save this.

I want to make this again but I am at a loss as to what size to make. This was a small which is what I currently measure (32" full, 30" over, 28" under) and the fabric definitely matched the recommended stretch %. I'm thinking maybe I need to angle the side seams to accommodate my narrow ribcage? Or maybe just make the XS?!
  • Our rescue cat Skyla is a Dilmun from Bahrain and as such is a bit of a unique shape - think cheetah. I ordered a jacket for her but it didn't fit (too short from neck to armpit) so I decided to use it to make my own pattern. (I didn't simply order again because I was very unhappy with the quality).

The original jacket was thin cotton but I wanted something softer and warmer for Skyla as she's tiny and feels the cold. I went with this scrap of short pile faux fur fabric from my stash and backed it with an interfaced black cheesecloth fabric cut from an old dress lining.

I chose the cheesecloth as the fur was already thicker than the original jacket and I didn't want too much bulk around the neck.

I interfaced the whole lining (I call it lining but the jacket is reversible) rather than just where the lead attaches to make it easier to sew. I hope the interfacing will soften with use as it is non woven which seems to.

I reused the original velcro but cut a new piece of webbing as I had a scrap of matching red/black striped piece.

Overall it works quite well but I suspect I could have extended the length even more than I did.
  • Had an amazing time at the Cardiff Anime and Gaming Con. So fantastic to see such incredible creativity both with the costumes and the art. Can't wait to get these two amazing prints from @rosemitcho and @sophieoliverart on my wall. Also love my key fob from @sockjems ♥️

My daughter was very excited to see you again @vampyboo_wolf 🥰
